Consolidometers, Expansion Index Testing
In order to estimate the potential settlement under pavements and structures, soil samples are often tested before and during the construction process. The strength and reliability are observed and measured, providing data to help assure a strong and sturdy structure. Without an even foundation, cracks are prone to form early on. Additionally, proper settlement permits heavy load and overall longevity.
Consolidometers are used to conduct many of the expansion tests needed to test the settlement of soil specimens. In tangent with consolidation load frames, these instruments test the strength of cured soil specimens prior to construction using swelling pressure tests. A vertically loaded soil layer is loaded in this appliance, creating one-dimensional direct compression on the sample. From there it is measured to assess its effects.
Humboldt provides two types of consolidometers:
The Expansion Index Consolidometer – used for conducting expansion tests on cured soil by measuring the height of the specimen after consolidation.
The Basic Swell/Expansion Consolidometer – used for conducting swell expansion tests on soil specimens by measuring the water drainage after consolidation.
Additionally, compaction base and collars and compaction hammers for soil samples are available to assist in these expansion tests.
